Who Road Scholar is
Road Scholar is a not-for-profit organization that inspires adults to learn, discover, and travel. USA Fencing framed the fit plainly: veteran fencers are adults aged 40 and up who keep learning and keep competing, which lines up with Road Scholar's mission.
USA Fencing called it the first partnership of this kind for the veteran fencing community, bringing visibility and support to athletes heading toward the Veteran World Championships.
What USA Fencing's CEO said
CEO Phil Andrews tied the announcement to the combination that defines veteran fencing — a commitment to lifelong learning alongside a competitive fire that does not fade with age. Steve August, Road Scholar's Vice President of Marketing, spoke to the same theme of lifelong learners.
Team USA's recent veteran results
At the 2025 Veteran World Championships in Manama, Bahrain, Team USA led the medal count with 33 medals, including 10 gold. That result is the backdrop for the new partnership.
How the 2026 team is selected
Selection for the Road Scholar Veteran National Team runs through three domestic events in 2026:
- February 2026 NAC in Cincinnati
- April 2026 NAC in Richmond, Virginia
- 2026 Summer Nationals in Portland, Oregon
Top results across those three events determine the team that represents the United States at the 2026 FIE Veteran World Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia, and at the 2026 Pan American Youth and Veteran Championships.

USA Fencing noted that fencers and families who want to support the partnership can enroll in a Road Scholar learning adventure.
Why veteran fencing matters at a saber club
Veteran competition is proof that saber is not a sport you age out of. Adults who start in their forties can train, compete regionally, and — for the most dedicated — chase a national team spot. It also changes the atmosphere in a club: adult fencers on the strip next to teenagers raise the standard for everyone.
