Saturday's gold medalists

A Y-10 saber title, and a school day missed

April Wang won Y-10 Women's Saber. She had to miss school on Monday to be there, and described adding the medal to a growing shelf at home — the kind of detail that captures what a national event actually looks like for a ten-year-old family.

A home-state Division II saber title

Max Gerstmann trains in Columbus and won Division II Men's Saber at a NAC close to home. His account of the day came down to a single piece of coaching he kept returning to: don't rush. He called it the highlight of his career so far. He earned his C rating at 14 and is now chasing a B.

That progression — C at 14, working toward B — is a realistic picture of how ratings move for a committed competitive fencer. It happens over seasons, through repeated entries, not in one breakthrough weekend.

What a NAC day is really like

A national event means an early call time, a long day on your feet, pools followed by direct elimination, and results that depend as much on recovery between rounds as on blade work. Families preparing for a first NAC should plan food, water and downtime as deliberately as warm-up.
