Day 1 national champions
- Junior Women's Saber — Brynnley McKee (Z1 Fencing Club & Tim Morehouse Fencing Club (Port Chester))
- Junior Men's Foil — Caleb Jeon (Silicon Valley Fencing Center, Columbia University)
- Cadet Women's Epee — Avni Shiv (Alliance Fencing Academy)
Junior Women's Saber
Brynnley McKee won Junior Women's Saber on the opening day. Junior women's saber has become one of the deepest domestic fields, and a JO title there is among the strongest domestic results a junior can hold.
What the Junior Olympics is
The Junior Olympic Championships is a qualified national championship for cadet and junior fencers, not an open-entry cup. Fencers earn entry through division and regional competition, which means the path starts months earlier at the local level. Events run over several days, with individual and team titles across all three weapons.
How a JO day runs
Pools of five-touch bouts, then a direct-elimination bracket of 15-touch bouts fenced in three periods. Seeding out of pools uses victory percentage, indicator and touches scored. Saber bouts move fast, so a whole DE round can pass in the time an epee bracket takes to fence one round.
Practical notes for a first JO
- Confirm qualification requirements with your club well before the entry deadline.
- Bring a labeled spare weapon and body cord, plus a spare mask cord if you have one.
- Plan food, water and rest — the schedule is long and the venue is loud.
