Cloudflare to Become Official Technology Partner of USA Fencing, Powering Boutcaster

USA Fencing announced a multi-year partnership with Cloudflare (NYSE: NET), naming the company its Official Technology Partner and the technical backbone of a new tournament streaming platform called Boutcaster.

What Cloudflare is providing

Per the announcement, Cloudflare supplies the internet security, reliability and performance tools that power Boutcaster. Those are the unglamorous pieces of any streaming product: keeping video available when thousands of people press play at the same moment, keeping it stable across the country, and keeping the delivery fast enough that a five-touch exchange still looks like fencing rather than a slideshow.

What Boutcaster is

Boutcaster is described as a new streaming platform for live and on-demand tournament viewing. Two words there matter for fencing families. Live is the part everyone assumes. On-demand is the part that changes how a season gets used, because a bout you can rewatch later is a bout you can learn from.

The April 2026 Richmond test

The latest successful test came at the April 2026 North American Cup in Richmond. According to USA Fencing, that event delivered more bouts on more streams — for fans, families, coaches, officials and athletes alike.

A NAC is an unforgiving test case. Many strips run at once, pools and direct elimination overlap, and the audience is scattered across time zones. Carrying more of it at once is a meaningful proof point rather than a demo.

The long-term vision

USA Fencing framed the goal plainly: scale toward streaming every bout on every strip at every USA Fencing event. USA Fencing CEO Phil Andrews described the partnership in the announcement as a step toward that broader access; we are paraphrasing rather than quoting, and the original release is linked at the bottom of this page.

Every bout on every strip is an enormous amount of video. It is also exactly what fencing has always lacked. Unlike a team sport with one field and one camera, fencing happens on a dozen surfaces simultaneously, which is why so much of it has historically gone unrecorded.

Why saber fencers should care

Saber is the fastest of the three weapons. Actions that decide a bout often last a fraction of a second, and the difference between a clean attack and a lost priority call can be invisible from the sideline. Video changes that conversation.

Three practical uses, none of which require a single new rule:

Reviewing your own bouts. A fencer who can rewatch a 15-touch bout sees patterns that were impossible to feel in the moment — when the tempo changed, which preparation kept working, which habit the opponent read early.
Scouting the field honestly. Not to obsess over opponents, but to understand common tactical shapes at a given level.
Family and coaches at a distance. Not every parent or coach can travel to every national event. Streams close that gap without adding travel cost.

What it does not change

Nothing here alters competition rules, eligibility or qualification. It is a broadcast and technology announcement, not a rules change. Fencers still qualify, register and compete the same way; there is simply more of the fencing available to watch.

How we use video in Bethesda

Our approach is ordinary and effective: fence, then look. When a student can see the distance they actually held rather than the distance they thought they held, corrections stick faster. A national platform that keeps more bouts available on demand simply gives that habit more material to work with.
