How to Enter Your First Saber Fencing Tournament on AskFRED

Your first saber fencing tournament starts online, not on the strip. Most local and divisional USA Fencing events take entries on AskFRED. Regional and national events often use a different portal. Get the platforms straight before you pay a fee.

This guide covers membership, AskFRED registration, what a listing means, and tournament day. It is written for saber fencers and parents at clubs like Saber Nation in Bethesda, inside USA Fencing’s Capitol Division.

What you need before you click Register

    1. A current USA Fencing membership

AskFRED’s first-tournament guide says most USA Fencing–sanctioned events need a valid membership. Access membership covers many local events. Competitive membership is what you need for rated regional and national competition. Buy or renew on the USA Fencing membership page. Confirm the tournament listing’s exact requirement before you enter.

If you are still choosing Access vs Competitive, our USA Fencing membership post walks through the types.

    2. An AskFRED account linked to your member number

Create a free account at askfred.net. Link your USA Fencing membership number so your status shows active. AskFRED notes this setup is one-time. After that you can enter local events from the same profile.

    3. The right weapon and age category

Every event is foil, epee, or sabre. Enter sabre only. Age brackets on AskFRED listings commonly include Y8, Y10, Y12, Y14, Cadet, Junior, Senior, and Veteran. For USA Fencing’s official 2026–27 birth years, use the Age and Rating Eligibility tables, then confirm with your coach. Do not guess from the calendar date of the meet.

Unrated first-timers can enter Open, Unrated, Div II, and Div III events under the rating rules AskFRED describes. You are not locked out of local competition because you have never earned a letter rating.

How to find a local saber event

On AskFRED, filter by date, location (state, city, or distance from your zip), and weapon (sabre). Open the tournament page for fees, deadlines, and organizer notes.

AskFRED recommends starting with local and divisional events. They are smaller and a better first step than a Regional Open Circuit or North American Cup. Bethesda sits in the Capitol Division, which covers Washington, DC, Montgomery County, and Prince George’s County, Maryland. Search Maryland and nearby DC-area clubs for your first strip day.

    How registration works on AskFRED

    AskFRED’s step list is short:

    1. Open the tournament.
    2. Select the sabre events that match your age and rating limits.
    3. Let the system check age, rating, and membership.
    4. Pay online.
    5. Keep the confirmation email.

Some organizers must approve entries. Registration is not check-in. You still arrive at the venue, check in with the bout committee, and present your member number before you fence.

Watch early, regular, and late fee tiers. Once registration closes, most events will not take you. If an event is full, AskFRED places you on a first-come waitlist and emails you if a spot opens.

Manage adds, drops, and withdrawals in My FRED before the deadline. Refund rules belong to the organizer, not to AskFRED’s default.

Local AskFRED vs regional and national registration

AskFRED’s regional and national guide is clear: local and divisional tournaments usually register on AskFRED. Regional circuits (RYC, SYC, RJCC, SJCC, ROC) and national events (NAC, Junior Olympics, Summer Nationals) typically register through USA Fencing member services, not AskFRED. Always read the event listing. A few regionals still use AskFRED.

Withdraw before the deadline if you cannot attend. Division I, Junior, and Cadet national events are capped at 315 entries, with priority for national point holders and A-rated fencers in the weapon.

For the ladder of local → regional → national event types, see USA Fencing tournament types.

What the day looks like (pools, then elimination)

USA Fencing’s Basics of Competition sets the scoring you will hear all day. Pool bouts are to five touches. Direct elimination is to 15. In saber, the first DE period runs to eight touches, then fencing continues until someone reaches 15. Some youth and Veteran events use 10-touch DE formats with two periods instead of three.

Bring what AskFRED lists for tournament day: membership number, full electric kit, and at least two sabers and two body cords. Arrive at least 30 minutes before posted check-in so you can check in, pass equipment check, and warm up.

    A simple first-tournament checklist

    • Confirm Access or Competitive membership on usafencing.org/membership.
    • Link that number in AskFRED.
    • Filter sabre + local date + drive distance.
    • Enter one event you are age-eligible for. Ask your coach before stacking events.
    • Save confirmation and watch organizer emails for check-in time.
    • Pack spares. Registration does not replace a broken body cord.

Train the bout, then enter the meet

A first tournament goes better when footwork and right-of-way already feel familiar. If you are new to the sport, start with how to start fencing. When you want strip-specific coaching before a Capitol Division date, private lessons at Saber Nation (4701 Sangamore Road Suite LL2, Bethesda) or contact the desk. We are saber-focused. We will help you pick the right local AskFRED event, not shove you into a NAC before you are ready.
