Private Saber Lessons — One-on-One Fencing Coaching in Bethesda, MD
Personalized one-on-one saber coaching for beginners, competitors, and advanced fencers who want faster progress.
Private saber lessons at Saber Nation are one-on-one sessions with a club coach, focused on the specific things holding a fencer back: distance control, blade preparation, timing on the attack, and defensive reactions under pressure.
Lessons are available in 20-minute and 30-minute formats, individually or as ten-lesson packages, at member and non-member rates. Private lessons pair with any group membership and are scheduled directly with the coaching staff.
Beginners use private lessons to build clean fundamentals quickly. Competitive fencers use them to prepare for regional and national events, review bout footage, and sharpen a personal tactical game.
All private lessons are taught at the Bethesda salle, 4701 Sangamore Road, Suite LL2, Bethesda, MD 20816. To book, call (301) 200-1853 or email info@sabernation.com.
How private lessons work
A private saber lesson is one coach, one fencer, and a strip. Lessons are available in 20-minute and 30-minute formats, individually or as ten-lesson packages, at member and non-member rates. Because there is no group to manage, every action is corrected as it happens, which is why a fencer taking one private lesson a week normally progresses faster than a fencer training in group class alone.
The coach sets the content around the fencer. A beginner spends the time on the on-guard position, advance and retreat, lunge mechanics, and the first parries. An intermediate fencer works on distance: holding it under pressure, breaking it deliberately, and recognising when an opponent has committed. A competitive fencer works on a tactical plan, preparation, second intention, and the specific actions that beat the opponents they keep losing to.
Pairing private lessons with group training
Private lessons are designed to sit alongside a group membership rather than replace it. Group class supplies the volume: footwork repetition, varied opponents, and open bouting. The private lesson supplies the correction. Members in the Development Program or Monthly Unlimited typically add one 20-minute or 30-minute lesson each week, then test the change in that week's bouting.
Non-members can take private lessons too. That suits a visiting fencer who wants strip time with a coach, or a family that wants to see how their child responds to one-on-one instruction before committing to a monthly program.
Before a first competition
In the weeks before a first local event, private lessons shift from technique to situations: the score is 4-4, the referee has just awarded a close attack against you, there are ten seconds left and you are down a touch. Fencers who have rehearsed those moments in a lesson handle them far better on the day.
Competitive fencers preparing for regional and national tournaments use lessons for bout review and for building a personal game rather than a generic one. Sabre is a weapon of preparation and tempo, and those are exactly the things that cannot be coached to twelve people at once.
