USA Fencing Age Categories for Saber: Y8 Through Junior

    Published

Birth year decides which saber events your fencer can enter. Here is how USA Fencing age categories work for the 2026–27 season, including the February NAC Cadet and Junior shift.

Tournament entries ask for an age category, not a grade. USA Fencing age categories are set by birth year. Pick the wrong bracket and the Bout Committee rejects the entry before anyone fences.

USA Fencing publishes the current tables for the 2026–27 season on its Age and Rating Eligibility page. The same page is the source for every birth-year range below.

    How eligibility works

Two rules cover almost every local, regional, and national event:

    1. Your birth year falls inside that category’s range, or
    2. As of the entry deadline, you sit on a National age-group point standing for a younger category, which lets you fence the next older age category even if your birth year is still “too young.”

You also need a current competitive USA Fencing membership in good standing. Categories that add rating floors (Division I needs A, B, or C, for example) still require those ratings by the deadline (Age and Rating Eligibility).

International events follow the birth years in Table A on that page.

    2026–27 birth years (Table A)

Use this table for local, regional, and national events through the 2027 February NAC — including the October and November 2026 NACs, the January 2027 SJCC, and 2027 Junior Olympics (Age and Rating Eligibility).

    CategoryCodeBirth years
    Youth 8Y82018–2020
    Youth 10Y102016–2019
    Youth 12Y122014–2017
    Youth 14Y142012–2015
    CadetCDT2010–2013
    JuniorJNR2007–2013
    Division I / I-A / II / III (and Senior Team)DV1 / DV1A / DV2 / DV3 / STM2013 or earlier

Youth brackets overlap on purpose. A fencer born in 2016 can sit in both Y10 and Y12. Cadet and Junior also overlap: birth years 2010–2013 appear in both, so many saberists fence Cadet and Junior on the same weekend when the schedule allows.

USA Fencing’s parent guide notes one equipment detail that tracks the youth brackets: Y10 weapons are capped at a 32.5-inch blade for all three weapons, including saber (Fencing for Parents).

The February NAC shift (Cadet and Junior only)

Youth birth years stay fixed for the whole season. Cadet and Junior do not.

After the February NAC, USA Fencing moves those two brackets one year later. For 2026–27 Table B events (March NAC onward through National Championships and the July Challenge), the ranges become (Age and Rating Eligibility):

    CategoryBirth years after February NAC
    Cadet2011–2014
    Junior2008–2014

That shift matters for Summer Nationals planning. USA Fencing’s January 2026 qualification update explains the age-out: once you leave Cadet or Junior after February, you drop off those national and regional point lists. Points earned before the age-out cannot qualify you for Summer Nationals in the category you just left (What’s Changing for 2026 Summer Nationals Qualification).

If your fencer is on the Cadet/Junior border, map qualification before February — not after.

    Veterans and Adult

Older saberists have their own brackets on the same eligibility page:

    • Adult: born 2005–1987
    • Adult Combined: born 2005 or earlier
    • Veteran: born 1987 or earlier, with V40 / V50 / V60 / V70 / V80 bands by decade

Those events share the “birth year first” rule. They do not use the Cadet/Junior February shift.

How this fits the tournament ladder

Age category answers who can enter. Tournament type answers where you fence — club, local, regional youth (RYC), regional open (ROC), or national (NAC). For that ladder, see USA Fencing Tournament Types for Saber.

College coaches watch Cadet, Junior, and Division I results more than Y10 medals. Families aiming at NCAA saber should read The NCAA Fencing Recruiting Guide once Junior events are on the calendar.

    Quick checklist before you register

    1. Open the current Age and Rating Eligibility table — seasons change every year.
    2. Match birth year to every event code on the entry form (Y12, Y14, CDT, JNR).
    3. If you are fencing “up,” confirm you are on the National point standing for the younger age group by the entry deadline.
    4. After February, re-check Cadet and Junior before you pay for March–July nationals.
    5. Confirm competitive membership status before the Bout Committee does.
