Adult Saber Fencing Classes in Bethesda, MD
Saber Nation runs an adult saber program in Bethesda, Maryland for fencers 18 and over, from complete beginners to college varsity athletes keeping their form through the off-season.
Adults train in their own group at $195 per month, unlimited. It is a saber-only club, so adult classes are built on saber footwork, distance control, and the tactical timing of preparation and counter-attack.
Who trains in the adult group
The adult group mixes people who started fencing last month with people who fenced in college fifteen years ago. Some are returning after a long break, some are parents who watched their children train and decided to pick up a blade, and some are varsity athletes home for the summer who need real bouting rather than solo drills.
No prior experience is required. Adults with no background start with the Beginners Introductory Package, eight sessions for $120, one time only, and then join the adult group. Coaches pair fencers by level for bouting, so a first-month adult is not thrown against a national competitor.
There is no upper age limit. Members train into their sixties and seventies, and the sport's emphasis on distance and timing rewards experience as much as speed.
Adult membership and drop-in rates
Adults 18 and over and college varsity fencers train unlimited for $195 per month. That covers the group classes on the club calendar, including open bouting nights.
For adults who travel or work unpredictable hours, drop-in group class is $45 and open fencing is $25, complimentary for members. Those rates suit someone in town for a few weeks who wants strip time without a monthly commitment.
A USA Fencing Access membership is required and is paid separately to USA Fencing. It covers insurance for club training and is also the first step toward entering local events.
What an adult session looks like
Sessions open with a movement warm-up and mobility work, because adult bodies need it more than teenage ones do. From there the class moves into footwork sequences, partner blade drills, and coached bouting on electric strips.
Coaching is technical rather than boot-camp. Adults get corrections on distance, hand height, and preparation, then immediately test them in bouts. Over a few months that produces the thing most adults come for: the ability to read an opponent and act before they do.
Fitness follows from the training rather than replacing it. Adult sabre training is demanding without being repetitive. A ninety-minute saber session is interval work by nature, with repeated explosive advances and retreats, and members typically notice the change in conditioning before they notice the change in results.
Competition and private lessons for adults
Adults who want to compete have a full ladder available: local events, Division II and Division III categories, Veteran age categories, and national tournaments. Coaches help members choose events that match their current level rather than pushing everyone toward nationals.
Private lessons are available in 20-minute and 30-minute formats, individually or as ten-lesson packages, at member and non-member rates. Most competing adults keep one short private lesson per week alongside group class. Call (301) 200-1853 or email info@sabernation.com to book.
Adults with no interest in tournaments are equally welcome. Plenty of members fence purely for the bouting and never register for an event.
