One club, just over the line

Washington, DC families train at Saber Nation in Bethesda, not at a separate District location. Every class, private lesson, and open fencing session takes place at 4701 Sangamore Road, Suite LL2, Bethesda, MD 20816. Fencers arrive from Northwest DC, the Palisades, Georgetown, and American University Park for a saber-only training room.

Club hours are Monday through Friday 4:00pm to 9:00pm and Saturday through Sunday 8:00am to 4:00pm. Call (301) 200-1853 or email info@sabernation.com before making the drive if you need help selecting a program.

Programs for DC youth and adults

New students can begin with the Beginners Introductory Package: eight sessions, available one time only per student. It is the club's only promotional package. Loaner masks, jackets, gloves, and sabers are available at the start, so a first class does not require an immediate equipment purchase.

After the introduction, the Development Program offers training once a week or twice a week. Monthly Unlimited is also available. Adults 18+ and College Varsity fencers can join the adult group. Drop-in group classes and open fencing are available.

Group lessons meet Monday and Wednesday, 4:45 PM to 6:15 PM, and Saturday, 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM, at the Bethesda salle. The same schedule, programs apply to members driving from Washington and members living in Maryland.

What to expect in a first saber class

Beginners start with stance, advances, retreats, and the lunge before moving into basic blade actions and partner exercises. Saber—also written sabre internationally—is fast, so coaches establish balance, distance, and controlled movement before a new fencer increases speed.

New students should wear athletic clothes, long trousers, and indoor court shoes, and bring water. Coaches introduce bouting gradually and check protective equipment before fencers use an electric strip. Youth fencers can begin at age 6, while adults can enter without prior experience.

Training for recreation or competition

Group sessions combine movement warm-ups, footwork, partner blade drills, and coached bouting on electric strips. Beginners build repeatable technique. More experienced fencers work on preparation, tactical choices, and decision-making under pressure. The room remains focused on saber rather than splitting instruction among three weapons.

Fencers who need focused technical work can combine group training with 20-minute or 30-minute private lessons. Individual coaching can address distance, timing, blade preparation, and competition situations. Tournament participation is available but never required; adults may train for recreation, fitness, local events, or a return to fencing.

Regular group attendance gives beginners enough repetition to connect footwork, blade actions, and tactical decisions. Once-a-week Development can fit a new family's schedule, while twice-a-week Development provides more practice. Monthly Unlimited offers additional training volume for fencers preparing for tournaments and level advancement.

Parents can look for progress in balance, distance control, and the ability to apply a coaching instruction during a bout. Adults develop the same fundamentals and then train toward recreation, fitness, or competition goals. Coaches recommend the next step based on each fencer's readiness rather than a fixed timetable.

Families planning around school breaks can review the fencing camps interest page. Camps are not listed as a scheduled product until dates are announced. Current beginner, youth, adult, and private training remains available throughout the year.
