Beginner Saber Fencing Classes in Bethesda, MD

Saber Nation runs beginner saber fencing classes in Bethesda, Maryland for new fencers ages 6 through adult. No experience is needed, no equipment is needed, and the first class is spent on the strip rather than on the sidelines.

Every beginner at the club starts in saber. The club does not run foil or epee programs, so a first lesson goes straight into the footwork, distance, and blade preparation that saber fencing actually uses.

Who beginner classes are for

Beginner classes take fencers from age 6 upward, including teenagers trying a new sport and adults who have never held a blade. Groups are organised by stage rather than by age alone, so a ten year old and a forty year old both work at the level that matches their control and conditioning.

Most families arrive from one of three places: a child saw fencing on television and asked to try it, a middle or high school student wants a sport that rewards thinking as much as athleticism, or an adult wants training that is physically demanding without being repetitive. All three fit a beginner group.

There is no tryout, no minimum fitness level, and no requirement to compete. Plenty of members never enter a tournament and train because bouting is good exercise and better problem solving.

How to start: the Beginners Introductory Package

New students begin with the Beginners Introductory Package: eight sessions for $120, available one time only per student. It is the club's only promotional package, and it exists so a family can find out whether saber suits them before committing to a monthly membership.

Across those eight sessions a beginner learns the on-guard position, advance and retreat, the lunge, basic cuts to the target area, parries, and how electric scoring registers a touch. By the last session most beginners are fencing short bouts against other beginners.

Equipment is supplied in class, so nothing needs to be bought first. A personal glove, roughly $30, is encouraged once a fencer decides to continue. A USA Fencing Access membership is required and is paid separately to USA Fencing.

Loaner gear and safety

Masks, jackets, gloves, and sabers are loaned for beginner classes. Club blades are maintained by the coaching staff and the protective kit meets the standard used in supervised club training, so a beginner can fence on day one without spending anything on equipment.

Fencing is a contact sport played at speed, and it is also one of the safer school-age sports. Beginners fence only under coach supervision, and bouting is introduced gradually once footwork and blade control are reliable. The sport's protective equipment, strict rules on blade condition, and referee control of distance are what keep it that way.

Wear athletic clothing and indoor court shoes to a first class. Long trousers are best. Bring water.

What comes after the intro package

Once the eight sessions are done, beginners continue in the Development Program, which covers beginner, intermediate, and recreational fencers at $195 per month once a week or $325 per month twice a week. Twice a week is the point where footwork becomes automatic, so families aiming at competition usually move there within a few months.

Fencers preparing for tournaments step up to Monthly Unlimited at $425 per month, which opens every group class on the calendar. Adults 18 and over, including college varsity athletes, train in their own group at $195 per month. Drop-in group class is $45 and open fencing is $25, complimentary for members.

Private lessons can be added to any group schedule. A beginner using one short private lesson a week builds clean fundamentals far faster than group work alone, because the coach corrects every action in real time.

Group lessons meet Monday and Wednesday, 4:45 PM to 6:15 PM, and Saturday, 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM, at the Bethesda salle, 4701 Sangamore Road, Suite LL2.

There is one salle. Every beginner class, group session, and private lesson happens at the Sangamore Road location, with on-site parking and easy access from River Road and Massachusetts Avenue. Families travel in from Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Washington DC, Potomac, Silver Spring, and Northern Virginia.
