USA Fencing Membership for Saber: Access, Competitive, and 2026–27 Fees

USA Fencing membership is the national credential that lets a saber fencer enter sanctioned events, track ratings and points, and sit under the organization’s member insurance at those events. USA Fencing says the community has more than 50,000 members (Membership).

The season runs August 1 through July 31. Dues are not prorated, with one extension exception noted below (Membership).

    Access vs Competitive

Two individual tiers matter most for club and tournament saber.

USA Fencing describes it for people who want to stay connected, try competing at the local level, or work events as staff (Membership). On the membership portal, Access covers participation in local tournaments and divisional qualifiers. You upgrade to Competitive to fence Regional and National events (Membership types).

Competitive is the tier for Regional, National, and international USA Fencing competitions when you meet the event’s eligibility rules (Membership).

If you only fence club practice and local Open or Div III events, Access can be enough. The day you register for an RYC, ROC, NAC, or other Regional or National saber event, you need Competitive (or an equivalent competitive license).

    Other tiers parents ask about

Caregivers can stay connected at no cost. Free Parent membership does not include voting rights in 2026–27.

It is for athletes whose primary affiliation is an NCAA varsity or collegiate club program (2026–27 fee announcement; Membership types).

It is required if you are not a U.S. citizen and/or represent another country and fence sanctioned USA Fencing events, including North American Cups in non-championship events (Membership; 2026–27 fee announcement).

It keeps Competitive-level benefits for life even if the Competitive fee rises later (Membership; 2026–27 fee announcement).

    What Competitive membership actually unlocks

USA Fencing lists these member benefits on its membership and benefits pages:

    • Right to compete in sanctioned events when you meet that event’s rules (Membership benefits)
    • Regional and national point standings used for championship paths (Membership)
    • Youth, junior, and cadet regional recognition, plus high school All-American and All-Academic programs (Membership)
    • College Connect recruiting access and three College Fairs at national events during the season for high school athletes (Membership; 2026–27 fee announcement)
    • Online profile for event history, classifications, national registration, and membership cards (Membership benefits)
    • Secondary medical/accident coverage for USA Fencing-sanctioned activities (Membership benefits)
    • Voting for members 18+ in eligible classes who are in good standing by the stated deadline (Membership; Membership benefits)

Membership alone does not put you into every event. Age brackets, ratings, and regional points still gate many saber events. For how those brackets work, start with USA Fencing’s age and rating eligibility tables. For how a bout is run once you are on the strip, see USA Fencing’s Basics of Competition.

    How to join

    1. Create an account at member.usafencing.org. Parents usually create a primary account, then add a dependent.
    2. Choose Access or Competitive (or another tier that matches how you will fence).
    3. Pay for the current season (August 1–July 31). Dues are non-refundable and non-transferable (Membership).

Extension rule: a new or first-time upgrading member who joins between April 1 and June 30 of the current season receives membership for the rest of that season plus the next season (Membership).

USA Fencing also notes that individual members of Member Clubs that use the USA Fencing insurance program must hold a USA Fencing membership (Membership). Ask your club which tier it expects before the first tournament entry.

    FAQ

Do I need USA Fencing membership to take saber classes?

Club class membership and USA Fencing membership are different. Many clubs require USA Fencing membership once you enter sanctioned tournaments or when the club uses USA Fencing insurance. Confirm with your salle before you buy a national membership you do not need yet.

Is Access enough for my first saber tournament?

Access covers local tournaments and divisional qualifiers on the membership portal. Regional and National events need Competitive (Membership types). Read the event’s eligibility text on AskFRED or the USA Fencing site before you register.

    When do 2026–27 fees apply?

The fencing membership year runs August 1 through July 31 (Membership). USA Fencing announced 2026–27 individual fee changes on May 20, 2026, with early renewal at 2025–26 rates through August 1, 2026 (2026–27 fee announcement).
