USA Fencing Requires Nationality Verification for National Championship Events

Junior Olympics in Oklahoma City (January 8-11, 2027) is the first Championship of the season. USA Fencing is asking members to finish verification early, not on registration day.
Which events need it
Per USA Fencing, nationality verification applies to:
- Junior Olympics: Junior and Cadet categories
- Division I and Parafencing National Championships: Division I and Parafencing categories
- Summer Nationals: Y10, Y12, Y14, Div. IA, Div. II, Div. III, and Veteran categories
Other categories held at those same tournaments do not require nationality verification.
North American Cups are not affected. NAC eligibility still follows the usual age, rating, and points rules. See our guide to USA Fencing NAC eligibility and the tournament schedule.
Why the change
For USA Fencing National Championships, athletes must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents with a green card. USA Fencing says verification cuts the chance of a fencer registering and then being withdrawn for ineligibility.
Documents accepted
Upload one of the following:
- Passport or passport card
- Birth certificate
- Certificate of citizenship
- Certificate of naturalization
- Green card (U.S. permanent residents only)
How long it takes
USA Fencing reports typical processing times of:
- Government-issued photo ID such as a passport: about 5 to 10 minutes
- Birth certificate: about 60 to 90 minutes
Many members may already be verified. If you uploaded a passport or other valid ID for age verification last season, check your account before uploading again.
How to verify
- Log in at member.usafencing.org
- Go to My Account → Edit Profile → Nationality Verification (under Personal Information)
- Upload one accepted document
Verification must be complete before you can enter an affected event.
Junior Olympics dates to watch

- October 7, 2026: Registration opens
- November 11, 2026: Last day to register at regular fees
- Registration closes at 5 p.m. the day before your event

Dual citizenship
Fencers with more than one citizenship must choose a single country to represent. That choice has to stay consistent. You cannot switch back and forth between representing the United States and another country.
If you have represented another country in international competition, you are not eligible for U.S. National Championships. If your USA Fencing account still lists the United States, contact the national office so the record can be updated.
