How to Qualify for the 2027 Junior Olympics: Cadet and Junior Paths

USA Fencing updated its Junior Olympics qualification guide for the 2026-27 season. The 2027 Junior Olympics take place Jan. 8-11, 2027, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at the Oklahoma City Convention Center.

Cadet and Junior birth years (through 2027 JOs)

Per the Athlete Handbook section cited in the guide (2.5.1):

Cadet: born 2010-2013 for tournaments before and including the 2027 Junior Olympics
Junior: born 2007-2013 for tournaments before and including the 2027 Junior Olympics

Fencers born after 2013 can fence up under the article's rules. In short:

Cadet fence-up: on the National Youth 14 Point Standings, they may fence Cadet at local and regional events. At least 100 Cadet Unified Points opens NAC Cadet eligibility. They still must meet a Cadet JO qualification path.
Junior fence-up: 100 or more Cadet Unified Points opens local and regional Junior events. At least 100 Junior Unified Points opens NAC Junior eligibility. They still must meet a Junior JO qualification path.

Why JOs matter

JOs are the national championships for Cadet, Junior, and Junior Team in each of the six weapons. Gold medals earn Cadet, Junior, or Junior Team National Champion titles for that year.

The event is also the last chance for Cadets and Juniors to earn qualification points for the Junior and Cadet Fencing World Championships held each April. The 2027 Junior and Cadet Worlds will be in Istanbul, Turkey.

Fencers must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, meet age criteria, and qualify. Athletes who represented another country at FIE-level competitions in the last three years (with the Cadet Worlds caveat in the article) are not eligible for a National Championship unless the FIE has approved them to represent the USA.

Four qualification paths

A fencer must complete at least one path.

Path 1: Unified Points List

Cadet: at least 125 points on the Cadet Unified Points list
Junior: at least 200 points on the Junior Unified Points list

Path 2: Regional points window

Earn a combined 120 regional points from your two best regional events between Dec. 10, 2025, and Aug. 1, 2026 (prior to Aug. 1, 2026, but after Dec. 10, 2025).

Path 3: Divisional qualifier

Finish in a qualifying position at your divisional qualifier. USA Fencing links a separate article for division-qualifier details in the official guide.

Path 4: IRC top 40%

Finish in the top 40% in the respective Junior or Cadet event at an IRC this season.

Trickle-down

If you qualify for Juniors, you are automatically qualified for Cadet events at JOs when your birth year fits Cadet. It does not work the other way. Cadets who want Junior must meet Junior requirements.

Dashboard note (read this before you panic)

At the time of the Sept. 23 update, the qualification dashboard was not connected to the unified points list. A fencer may already be qualified even with no green checkmark. USA Fencing hoped to have the dashboard live by Sept. 30, when JO registration opens. If you do not see a green check, verify against the unified points list.

Dates to know

Milestone — Date

Registration opens — Sept. 30, 2026, 12:00 p.m. ET

Regular fee deadline — Nov. 11, 2026

Qualification deadline (results usable for 2027 JOs) — Dec. 9, 2026

Petition deadline — Dec. 13, 2026, 11:59 p.m.

Event — Jan. 8-11, 2027, Oklahoma City

Results after Dec. 9, 2026, count toward the 2028 Junior Olympics.

If your divisional qualifier falls after the Nov. 11 regular-fee deadline, you still register by that fee deadline. The entry stays pending until qualification. USA Fencing notes pending statuses move to approved after the qualification deadline.

Membership, nationality, and registration

Competitive membership: required if you qualify through a Division Qualifier (Life, Life installment, and Collegiate competitive memberships also count)
Nationality verification: required before you can register. Only U.S.-representing fencers compete at U.S. National Championships
Register yourself: qualification does not auto-register you. Use your member profile at member.usafencing.org

Division-qualifier results must come through the division chair. Screenshots from AskFRED do not count. USA Fencing says it typically takes two to five days after the event for results to land in the system.

Petitions

If registration shows denied and you have not qualified through a pathway, you may petition. The petition fee is $100 and nonrefundable. If the petition is denied, the event fee (only) is refunded. Fencers who competed in a Divisional Qualifier are automatically not eligible to petition. Petition link was listed as coming soon on the official pages.

Per the event page, competition is at the Oklahoma City Convention Center (100 Mick Cornett Dr, Oklahoma City, OK 73109), Exhibit Halls A-D, free to the public. Categories include Junior, Cadet, Junior Team, and Parafencing.
