What the Trial system changes
Beginning Aug. 1, 2026, Cadet, Junior, and Division I move onto a Trial points system with a unified points list. Instead of separate structures pulling in different directions, a fencer's standing in those categories comes from one list.
Best six results
A fencer's Trial points total is built from their best six results. Strong performances count; a bad day at one event does not sit on the record forever, because it simply falls outside the best six once better results arrive. What it is used for — and what it is not
The Trial list governs domestic ranking, seeding, and event eligibility. It does not affect international team selection. That distinction is the single most common point of confusion, so it is worth repeating: domestic seeding and eligibility, yes; international selection, no.
Legacy points continue
The Legacy points system continues to operate for Team standings, Rolling standings, and international selection, and USA Fencing has said it will remain in place through at least the 2028–29 season. Families should expect to see both sets of numbers referenced for the next several seasons.
A two-year trial
The new structure is exactly what its name says: a two-year trial. It may be adjusted based on how it performs, so treat the details as current rather than permanent, and check the official source before making decisions that depend on them.
How this connects to eligibility and event splits
