Junior & Cadet Worlds Day 4: Jaelyn Liu Repeats as Junior Women's Foil Champion

Jaelyn Liu (Star Fencing Academy, Fencing Institute of Texas) won Junior Women's Foil gold on Day 4 of the 2026 Junior & Cadet World Championships in Rio de Janeiro — her second consecutive world title in the event.

A 15–4 final

The Plano, Texas native closed the championship bout against Linlin Zhu (CHN) 15–4. A final that lopsided at a world championships is rare, and it came at the end of a day in which Liu never looked like losing control of a bout — her earlier wins included 15–5, 15–10, 13–10, 15–7 and 15–8 results.

The semifinal that nearly ended it

The one bout that came close to stopping her was the semifinal against Minchae Shin (KOR). Liu trailed 10–8, and her fencing hand was on the edge of cramping. She rallied from there to win 15–14.

Fencers and parents tend to remember the gold-medal score. The 15–14 is the one worth studying: a one-touch margin, a physical problem mid-bout, and a fencer who kept making decisions instead of hoping.

Back-to-back

The win made Liu a repeat Junior Women's Foil world champion. In her comments afterwards she framed it partly as relief — a running bet with her parents, and a hard season that finally landed where she wanted it.

What came next

The lesson for younger fencers

Two things carried this day: conditioning good enough to survive a cramping hand in a semifinal, and the habit of fencing touch by touch when down 10–8 in a world semifinal. Neither is talent. Both are trained — in conditioning blocks, in score-down bouting drills, and in private lessons that put a fencer under pressure on purpose.
