USA Fencing profiled Aaron Luo, co-founder and CEO of the New York accessories brand Caraa, on the release of a Caraa x USA Fencing collection.
Who designed it
Luo competes in Vet-40 Men's Epee and is a member of Fencers Club in New York City. He also coaches and cheers on two fencing sons, and serves as an executive advisor to USA Fencing's CEO — competitor, parent and administrator at once.
His path back to the sport
Luo fenced in high school and college, then rediscovered the sport after launching Caraa in 2014. That arc is common among adult fencers: an early stretch of competition, years away while careers and families take priority, then a return once the schedule allows.

Why a fencer designing fencing bags is not a small detail
Fencing gear is awkward to carry. A full kit is a mask, jacket, plastron, glove, knickers, shoes and multiple weapons, and it has to survive airports, parking garages and gym floors. Designers who have not carried that combination through a tournament weekend tend to miss the specifics — where a damp jacket goes, how a bag stands up when it is half empty, whether you can reach a body cord without unpacking.
Luo has described fencing as a way of life rather than a hobby, which is roughly how most competing families experience it.
Fencing as a lifelong sport
Veteran categories — Vet-40 and up — are among the healthier parts of the domestic calendar. Adults who return to fencing often stay longer than they expect, because the sport rewards reading an opponent as much as raw speed, and progress remains visible for years.
