The 2026 recipients
- Blade Runner Fencing Club — Staten Island, N.Y.
- Academic Magnet High School Fencing Club — North Charleston, S.C.
- Fencers Club Inc — New York, N.Y.
- Four Corners Fencing Club — Durango, Colo.
- Boston Fencing Club — Boston, Mass.
A shift from individuals to clubs
This is the first cycle since Fencing the Gap moved from individual grants to club-level awards. More than 60 clubs applied.
How applications were judged
Applications were scored on a 100-point scale across four areas: equity alignment, program impact, community rootedness, and accountability readiness. A geographic diversity check was applied alongside the scoring.
What the money can pay for
Each grant is expected to reach at least 30 to 50 young people. Funds may cover equipment, coaching stipends, facility rental, scholarships, transportation, outreach, and adaptive equipment.
Why cost is the real barrier
Fencing's access problem is rarely interest — it is the stack of costs before a first bout: a mask, jacket, glove, weapon, and a facility that charges by the hour. Club-level grants target exactly that, because a club with loaner gear and subsidized floor time can take in fencers whose families could not buy a personal kit.
Transportation and facility rental being eligible matters too. Those are the line items that quietly decide whether a program in a given neighborhood is possible at all.
Funding and the next cycle
The grants are supported by the U.S. Fencing Foundation and its donors. Applications for the 2027/28 cycle open in Spring 2027.
