USA Fencing announced the Creator Showdown, a three-day event running Sept. 21-23 at the Heineken Riverdeck at The Seaport in Lower Manhattan.
What the event is
The Creator Showdown pairs 12 social media creators with four Team USA fencers. Ten of the 12 creators had been announced at the time of the announcement, with a combined reach of more than 215 million followers.

The format
Rather than a conventional tournament, the Showdown runs through a set of challenge formats, including King of the Strip, a Battle Royale, and a free-for-all styled after the Hunger Games. Points accumulate across the challenges, and the creator with the most points at the end wins.
Why this kind of event works for fencing
Fencing is easier to enjoy than to explain. A paragraph about priority and right-of-way loses most readers; twenty seconds of a saber exchange does not. Handing a blade to someone with a large audience and letting them be genuinely bad at it for a few minutes is one of the more honest ways to show what the sport feels like from the inside.
It also puts elite fencers in an unusual position. Coaching a total beginner through a first bout is a different skill than winning one, and the athletes who do it well tend to be the best ambassadors the sport has.
Saber on camera
Saber is the fastest of the three weapons and the most legible to a new viewer: the whole blade scores, the target is above the waist, and bouts move in bursts. That is part of why saber shows up so often in clips that travel.

You do not need to be a creator, an athlete, or in any particular shape to start. Beginner saber classes start with footwork and distance, with loaner equipment provided.
