The gold-medal roster
- Will Morrill (Scarsdale Fencing Center, Columbia)
- Emilio Gonzalez (Scarsdale Fencing Center, Fencers Club)
- Silas Choi (Globus Fencing Academy, Princeton)
- Shaun Kim (Tim Morehouse Fencing Club)
Morrill has now been on all four championship teams. He also took individual Junior Men's Saber silver on Day 1 of these championships.
From 17th to a dynasty
The run did not start from a position of strength. The U.S. Junior Men's Saber team finished 17th in 2022 before the current streak of titles began in 2023.
Morrill's own read on the pattern, paraphrased from his comments: these teams often start slowly, grind through close matches, and find their flow as the day goes on. That is a recognizable description of team saber, where a squad can be down three legs and still be well inside striking distance because touches come so fast.
Junior Women's Saber team finishes eighth
The Junior Women's Saber team placed 8th out of 33 teams:
- Charmaine Andres (Cali Fencing)
- Dora Zhang (LA Fencing Academy of Pomona)
- Brynnley McKee (Z1 Fencing, Tim Morehouse Fencing Club)
- Sophie Liu (Capital Fencing Academy, Yale)
Why team saber rewards depth
A saber relay is nine legs to 45 touches, and each leg is short enough that one strong fencer cannot carry three weak ones. Four fencers who each hold their leg beat a squad with one star. That is why our competitive saber groups train squad-wide conditioning, bout tactics, and relay-specific pacing rather than building a program around a single athlete.
