Mandy Patinkin Named First Honorary Team Captain as USA Fencing Launches Ambassador Program for LA28

USA Fencing named Mandy Patinkin its first Honorary Team Captain as part of a new Ambassador Program launched ahead of the LA28 Olympic Games.

The announcement

Patinkin, an Emmy and Tony award-winning actor, is the first person to hold the Honorary Team Captain title. The role sits inside USA Fencing's newly launched Ambassador Program, built around raising the sport's visibility in the run-up to LA28.

The Princess Bride connection

Patinkin fenced left-handed on screen in The Princess Bride nearly forty years ago, in what remains one of the most recognized sword sequences in film. He has said he hopes to fence right-handed — his dominant hand — this time around.

For a sport that most Americans first encounter through movies, that is a useful bridge. The film version is choreographed; the real thing is a timed, refereed contest decided by electronic scoring. But the appeal that draws people in is the same.

Why an ambassador program matters before LA28

A home Olympic Games is the largest recruiting moment a sport gets. Fencing in the United States tends to grow in bursts tied to visibility, and clubs see inquiries rise sharply after major broadcasts. An ambassador program is an attempt to build that interest deliberately rather than waiting for it.
