The May 6 qualification deadline

Qualification closes May 6, 2026. A fencer who has not qualified by that date cannot qualify afterward. Points and results also cannot be combined across seasons — only the current season counts toward qualification.

That single deadline is the most important planning item on this list. Working backward from May 6 tells you how many regional events a fencer realistically has left to reach a points threshold.

July Challenge changes

The July Challenge covers Cadet, Junior, and Division I, and it is open to both national and international fencers.

All other July Challenge pathways are unchanged.

National Championships: citizenship requirement

The National Championships portion — Y10, Y12, Y14, Division IA, Division II, Division III, and Veteran events — is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents only.

Youth pathway changes

Y14: the regional requirement rose to 160 Y14 points, up from 150. A new pathway was added for the top 40% of Y14 at the International School Circuit.

Y12: the regional pathway stays at 70 Y12 regional points, unchanged. A new pathway was added for the top 40% of Y12 at the International School Circuit.

Y10: a new pathway was added — participation in Y10 at the International School Circuit.

Division pathway changes

Division IA: new pathway for the top 20% in Adult or Adult Combined regional events.

Division II: new pathway for the top 40% in Adult or Adult Combined regional events.

Division III: two new pathways — top 40% in a Division III regional event, or top 40% in an Adult or Adult Combined regional event.

All other National Championship pathways are unchanged.

The age-out rule families miss

Cadet and Junior fencers who age out after the February NAC are removed from those point lists. Points earned before aging out cannot be used to qualify for Summer Nationals in the category the fencer has aged out of. If your fencer is on an age boundary this season, check this before assuming a Cadet or Junior qualification carries through to the summer.

What to do next

  1. Identify which events your fencer is targeting at Summer Nationals.
  2. Check the current standing against the relevant pathway — points, percentage finish, or participation.
  3. Count the qualifying events remaining before May 6, 2026.
  4. If a fencer is close to a points threshold, plan regional entries early rather than hoping for one strong result in April.
