USA Fencing Opens Two New Paths Into the Elite Field

USA Fencing heard the pushback on Elite placement under the new points lists. On Sept. 19, 2026, it announced two responses: a temporary opt-in for the October and November NACs, and a permanent exemption process for high-level fencers returning from an extended leave.

The temporary path: Legacy Top 112 opt-in

For the October and November NACs only, a fencer who sits in the Top 112 of the Legacy points standings for that age category, but outside the Top 112 on the new Unified Points List (UPL), may opt in to Elite.

Key details from USA Fencing:

These opt-in spots increase the Elite field above 112. UPL-based Elite fencers do not lose their places.
Eligible October NAC fencers were identified by USA Fencing and notified by email, with a reminder to opt in through the member profile.
You can also opt out and stay in Challenger, placed by UPL rank. Either choice is valid and does not change your standing.
For the October NAC, the selection deadline is 11:59 p.m. PT on Sept. 23, 2026, the night before the event split. The split becomes visible by 5 p.m. ET on Sept. 24.

The permanent path: Elite eligibility exemptions

USA Fencing also created a standing process for fencers who could not compete in points-earning events for an extended period but have a high-level record.

To petition, a fencer must have been unable to compete in points-earning competitions for an extended time and meet any one of these:

Competed for the United States, or another FIE member nation, within the past four years at the Olympic Games, a Senior, Junior, or Cadet World Championships, or a designated Senior, Junior, or Cadet international event
Placed in the Top 32 of the Elite field at a North American Cup or National Championship, in the age category of the request, within the previous two seasons
Fenced as an individual at the NCAA National Championships within the previous two seasons

Requests go through USA Fencing’s exemption form (linked in the official article). The National Office reviews each submission and communicates decisions before that tournament’s event split. Decisions are final. Submissions are due by the Withdrawal Deadline for the tournament in question. Apply early.
